Julie, the founder of Julie Smith Kids, is a graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where she studied Business and Fashion Merchandising. After receiving her Bachelor’s Degree, she headed to Europe to attend the prestigious Paris Fashion Institute, focusing on design and merchandising.
Upon returning to the United States, Julie landed her first job in the industry with Nordstrom, for whom she assisted, managed and bought for over 13 years. During her tenure with Nordstrom, then a family owned business whose edge on customer service is the foundation of her business today, she worked as a buyer in junior sportswear, accessories, contemporary sportswear and childrenswear.
Julie’s experience in children’s attire and accessories later offered her the opportunity to pursue the wholesale side of the industry children’s clothing.
Since starting Julie Smith Kids, Julie has enjoyed servicing boutiques and specialty stores in the children’s business to better serve the next generation.
Cheryl Nielsen is a graduate of the University of Hawaii and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. She received her degree in fashion merchandising and business.
After moving to Los Angeles from Hawaii, Cheryl was introduced to Nordstrom where she met Julie. They worked together as Department Managers and Buyers. Cheryl continued her path up the pyramid and held several positions in the company from Sales Associate, Department Manager, Buyer, and Regional Merchandise Manager to Human Resources. She had the opportunity to grow and learn with Nordstrom for many years.
Her passion for fashion, selling, customer service and extensive knowledge in the retail industry made Cheryl a perfect candidate to join Julie Smith Kids. She is and continues to be an integral part of the Julie Smith Kids team.
